Contribute

Thank you for your interest in submitting articles, photos or multimedia for Photojournalism Planet.

As the name indicates, Photojournalism Planet is an online travel magazine with an international focus. Stories should portray interesting issues that have a global readership.

The editorial team expects prospective contributors to be familiar with the style and format of the material that is published on Photojournalism Planet. In general, we are looking for photojournalists who possess a unique style. All contributors must have the ability to produce high quality, relevant projects. We publish 12 to 20 articles per month. Multimedia and photo essays are encouraged; however, written articles are more than welcome if they are accompanied by a few images.

Please read these important guidelines before querying:

  • Familiarize yourself with the style that Photojournalism Planet magazine has in their articles and photos.
  • Avoid covering the same topics – Look through old topics to be familiar with what we have already published on our site. We’ll revisit geographical areas countless times, but similar topics should be avoided unless there is an exciting new angle or new information.
  • Publishing rights – Photojournalism Planet is flexible in regards to publishing rights. We require that all submissions are unique to our site and are used solely for Photojournalism Planet for a minimum of 90 days after publishing. The creator ultimately holds the copyright and is free to use the material in a portfolio, for personal promotion or to promote Photojournalism Planet.
  • Payment – As a start up magazine, Photojournalism Planet is currently unable to pay contributors for their work. We are working diligently to grow our brand and we hope that we are able to change this policy in the near future.

Contributors do receive several benefits for submitting work. Aside from being a part of a growing website dedicated to online journalism, contributors will have a dedicated link to their own website on Photojournalism Planet’s front page for one month. After the article is archived, the link will remain on a secondary links page until the article is removed from the website.

We will also supply reference letters or recommendations to trusted contributors upon request. This will assist contributors in their never-ending search for freelance work.

Submitting Written Work:

Photojournalism Planet encourages prospective contributors to query the editors prior to sending in completed projects; however, we will review any submissions that fit into our editorial outline.
Please send all queries to editor@photojournalismplanet.com

  1. Briefly outline your story idea, angle, and length of manuscript in a brief query letter. Please state the availability of photographs to accompany the article.
  2. Write an original draft that does not exceed the assigned length. In general, features should be between 750-100 words, journal entries between 400-800 words, and different views between 350-750 words.
  3. Check your spelling, punctuation, grammar, and, most importantly, facts.
  4. Supply 4-5 links that should appear within the article. The links should take readers to supporting or contrasting information that provides more in-depth information about the topic or location.
  5. Include several high quality photographs that meet the photography submission guidelines.

Submitting Photography, Photo-essays, and Multimedia:

Photojournalism Planet invites interested photojournalists to submit digital photographs, photo-essays and multimedia projects for possible publication.

Photojournalism Planet retains full editorial control over the material it publishes. Material may be edited to our standards or omitted from publication by the editors. Potential contributors should not maintain an emotional attachment to their work that does not enable us to work with their submissions. The editing process is done strictly to increase the quality of the published material and should, by no means, change the contributors intended angle.

Please send a brief query letter to the photoeditor@photojournalismplanet.com prior to sending in emails containing more then three photographs. FTP arrangements will need to be made for multimedia work or larger photo essays.

Readers submitting photos for either the Readers Photos or Photo of the Moment sections are encouraged to limit their submissions to three images.

  1. Technical Specifications – Submissions must be in JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) digital format, with a long edge measuring at least 1,200 pixels, and no greater than 5 mb in size. Please provide us with high quality images with limited editing. Photojournalism Planet understands the need for basic photo editing; however: we discourage any manipulation that changes the context an image. Photojournalism Planet will not consider any photographs that it identified as obscene, provocative, or otherwise containing objectionable content.
  2. Rights Granted – By uploading a photograph, photo essay or multi media piece, you agree to the stated terms of use in regards to publication and copyright. We require that all submissions are unique to our site and are used solely for Photojournalism Planet for a minimum of 90 days after publishing. The creator ultimately holds the copyright and is free to use the material in a portfolio, for personal promotion or to promote Photojournalism Planet.
  3. Approval – We will contact you to let you know whether material has been accepted for publication. Your article, photos or multi media will likely be edited. We do this for brevity, focus, flow, and coherence. Your title may also be changed to reflect a more compelling description of the content, and to target relevant search engine keywords. In rare circumstances, we may ask you to make the required revisions.

Once your material is published, help us promote it! It is not just for the benefit of Photojournalism Planet. Increased readership is great promotion for you as a freelance photojournalist.
